Fixing Windows update problems on a UEFI system with dual boot (grub)

I’ve been battling for a long time with this so I better share the fix with the world and with myself a few months from now when I’ve forgotten everything. Since a year ago, Windows Update started to fail consistently. It would reboot, go to 99% and then write “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes”. Followed by two or three slow reboots to undo everything. After trying many things, this is the exact sequence that worked for me:

JuanjoAlvarez.net 4.0!

So here is it 🎉, the fourth iteration of my scarcely updated web page / blog. To recap previous versions: 1.0 (lates 90’s?): A long, long time ago. Was basically made by manual PHP includes. Probably used animated gifs and a visit counter. 2.0 (2004?): Migrated tu Drupal. 3.0 (2009): Migrated to Django with some modules. In the 11 years since this migration, the site went trough several revisions including moving stuff to Docker and moving to a self-hosted solution instead of AWS and a couple total reworks of the stylesheet and design.

LG 24UD58: How to get 60FPS at 4k

This is another of those “helping somebody google this less than I had to” articles. I’ve a Dell XPS 13 (the 2016 version) and since I started to use it with a LG 24UD58 4K monitor I noticed that things we not as smooth as I liked. Running (Linux, of course) xrandr I noticed that the monitor was running at 30FPS and there wasn’t an option for a higher framerate just as it was for lower resolutions.

How to set Sandstorm behind a reverse proxy, keeping your sandcats.io domain and certificates

I’m having some fun tinkering with my new Intel NUC home server (with Linux, of course) and moving everything that I had in the “cloud” to it (except backups). Last night I set up Sandstorm behind an nginx reverse proxy accepting https connections (for this and other services) while keeping Sandstorm working with my registered sandcats.io domain and free auto-renewable https certificates. Since this is something I couldn’t find any documentation about I’ll add how to get it done in this article.

Vim to Emacs' Evil chaotic migration guide

I’ve been using Vim for 18 years, and for me it was the only option for serious text work (like programming or writing) because I’m totally addicted to modal text editing to the point that I feel crippled when I’ve to edit text in a non-modal editor. You may argue that programming is not about how fast you write and you would be right, but if you can imagine somebody programming on an on screen keyboard on a tablet, you know how modal editor users feel about non modal edition.
